Henri D. Grissino-Mayer's Ultimate Tree-Ring Chart - a 2,129 year long reconstruction of rainfall for northwestern New Mexico. This reconstruction was based on a master chronology developed from some extremely old living trees and remnant wood found in El Malpais National Monument, just south of Grants, New Mexico. The graph above shows a 100-year spline (much like a moving average) fit to the reconstruction to accentuate the century-scale trends in past rainfall.

Grants, New Mexico - one of New Mexico's favorite year-round recreation spots. While visiting Grants, you can explore the many attractions of northwestern New Mexico, including Indian cultures, ancient ruins, lava flows, towering mountains, and year-round recreation opportunities.

El Morro National Monument - El Morro's "Inscription Rock" is a soft sandstone monolith, rising 200 feet above the valley floor, on which are carved hundreds of inscriptions. The monument also includes pre-Columbian petroglyphs and Pueblo Indian ruins. There is a museum/visitor center and beautiful self-guiding trails. Open All Year with a nine site campground located in the park. Sites are first-come, first-served. Fees charged during summer months.

Ice Caves and Bandera Volcano - visit the Ice Caves and Bandera Volcano located in the heart of El Malpais. This "Land of Fire and Ice" is situated right on the Continental Divide southwest of Grants, NM. There is a trail to the Ice Cave, and the volcanic Bandera crater - spectacular sights near the historic Ice Cave Trading Post displaying ancient artifacts as well as contemporary Indian artwork.

El Malpais National Monument - Sandstone bluffs and mesas border the eastern side, south of Interstate 40 near Grants, adjacent to Highway 117, providing access to vast wilderness. Highways 53 and 109 flank the western boundary, where volcanic features such as lava flows, cinder cones, pressure ridges and complex lava tube systems dominate the landscape. Chaco Culture National Historical Park - Chaco Canyon served as a major urban center of ancestral Puebloan culture. Remarkable for its monumental public and ceremonial buildings, engineering projects, astronomy, artistic achievements, and distinctive architecture, it served as a hub of ceremony, trade, and administration for the prehistoric Four Corners area for 400 years.
