The Inspiration of Gardening

Our gardens, and our lives, are instruments that once tuned and learned to be played give great joy - the simplest form of gratitude. As strings of an instrument are tuned by stretching the string to create a balanced tension, our soil and our soul are stretched and can be tuned to create a balanced growing medium and a balanced life.

Tension is from the Latin meaning "a stretching". Balance is a state of harmony, as among the elements of an artistic creation. If our soil is stretched beyond its ability to sustain healthy plants it is unbalanced. We balance or unbalance our spirits as we are stretched by the tensions of daily life. To balance our soil we must test it and provide the needed nutrients to bring it into harmony in order to bring forth the fruits of our garden. To balance our spirits we must understand what is needed to reduce tension and create understanding. To have this harmony is to bring forth the fruits of our spirit.

As the garden brings forth healthy plants, we must bring forth healthy thoughts and actions by developing intellectual peace, making social progress, feeling moral satisfaction, expressing spiritual joy, and understanding cosmic wisdom. "The universe is a whole; no thing or being exists or lives in isolation." We are acting units in the sum of the parts. We determine the whole. All gardens are in a sense, a form of autobiography. We create an expression of who we are, reflected by our actions. A beautiful garden is a link to our soul. "Think, act, and live honestly, loyally, fearlessly, and truthfully."

"Consider the lilies, how they grow.   They toil not, neither do they spin."
