Hogans
In New Mexico, traditional Navajo Hogans are male or female. A male Hogan is smaller, has six sides, and is used for ceremonies and purification, while a female Hogan has eight sides and is where the family lives and is nurtured. The door of a Hogan faces east to meet the rising sun.
Our Hogan has eight sides, with the east door centered to meet the rising sun at spring and fall equinox. There are large windows on all eight sides to take in the expansive views.

The New Gardens
“You must teach your children that the ground beneath their feet is the ashes of your grandfathers. So that they will respect the land, tell your children that the earth is rich with the lives of our kin. Teach your children what we have taught our children, that the earth is our mother. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth. If men spit upon the ground, they spit upon themselves.”

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
Robert A. Heinlein
